Totally Accurate Battle Simulator wears the "accurate" title with tongue firmly planted in cheek, but the results are a game that lets you replicate a practically limitless number of battles. Whether you're looking to test Babylonian tactics against Greek armor or pit a hundred ducks against an elephant, you'll find a wealth of options to choose from. The player simply picks both sides and watches them engage against one another. A ludicrously oversensitive physics system ensures that nothing turns out exactly the way you planned.

But that doesn't mean that everything is random. That's most prominent in the story mode, where increasingly complex engagements require the strategic employment of the forces available to you. These story sequences play like puzzles and develop in the player an implicit understanding of both the strengths of units and the underpinnings of the physics system. Even when success can feel like a continual test of trial and error, the goofy and cartoon-inspired characters make failing still feel like fun.

But the meat of the experience comes from just playing around with the game. This is a sandbox first and foremost, and mixing up a motley crew of characters to clash on one of the maps available is addictive in its own unique way. It might not technically be an educational game, but TABS encourages a sense of curiosity, creation, and active engagement like few other games on the market.
